Humans developed fear for a reason, and it all started with the tiger. From our early hunter-gatherer days, threats from our violent world were very real, and to survive, we needed tools. When a threat arose, we needed heightened senses and alertness, stronger muscles, faster reflexes, and longer endurance. Fear was the primary initiator of those tools.
In the modern, developed world however, “tigers” (objects of real danger) aren’t as abundant as they once were, but “paper tigers” are (things that appear threatening, but are mostly ineffectual). Our instincts can’t tell the difference so our bodies treat them the same. We become unnecessarily thrown into the fear state far too often, and that can have serious negative impacts.
